Cytology is an essential diagnostic tool in veterinary dermatology. Skin and ear samples will be examined in house to guide accurate treatment.
Advanced care and a friendly team who truly understand skin and ear conditions – because your pet deserves to be comfortable and happy.
Cytology is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools in pets with skin and ear disorders. It is a quick and easy means of gathering a tremendous amount of diagnostic information and can be performed in-clinic.
At Cheshire Veterinary Dermatology cytology is at the heart of what we do. We also use it to monitor the response to treatment and to guide treatment changes and helps us determine if further testing is necessary such as a skin biopsy or culture and sensitivity.
There are different ways to obtain the samples from your pet including adhesive tape strips, hair plucks, skin scrapings, impression smears, ear smears and fine needle aspirates.
Cytology can help characterise the type of microbial infection as well as inflammatory cells. Cancers, fungal infections, parasites and autoimmune disease can also be detected.

Microscopic diagnostics can sound technical, but we’re here to make it simple. Here are answers to common questions about how cytology works and what it means for your pet’s care.
Most sampling methods such as the tape strips and impression smears are non-invasive and quick. Skin scrapings can cause a little short-lived discomfort. We will occasionally recommend sedation if the skin or ear disease is painful.
Cytology is routinely performed in every pet with skin lesions. The samples will be looked at in-house and treatment can be started the very same day.
Yes! Repeat cytology is needed to monitor how well your pet is responding to treatment or if a change of medication is needed.
